Doctor? Doctor!. The background is Pyramids pyrotechnics by Edward Miller, the June illustration from the 2005 Discworld calendar. I didn't take too much time over it as it was meant to be just a demo, and had trouble with the lighting (just the room light) but I rather like how it turned out. I would have preferred the illusion of better depth of field but had to prop the calendar up with the Tardis - let's pretend it's a 60s-style studio backdrop, eh? At least it's more effective than the ones they used for The Web Planet!

Then post the track name and artist of the first song for each letter of the alphabet, with a little comment if you are inclined that way. It should go without saying that you should not skip the embarrassing ones, but feel free to skip ones that aren't really tracks, or are badly labelled.

(I Don't Know Why) But I Do - Clarence (Frogman) Henry
Parentheses come first in the alphabet, apparently
1 in 10 - UB40
Then come numbers. But I thought I'd skip listing the 2s, 3s and so on... there would be rather a lot of them
A Canterbury Tale - Dreadzone
Picked this up when I was looking for different mixes of Little Britain - it's a bit chillout.
Baba O'Riley - The Who
I don't really like the Who so I'm not sure why I downloaded this. I always think Daltrey's singing "Teenage Whistlin' "... those crazy teenage fads, eh?
C Funk - The Mighty Boosh
Playing in the pub at the end of The Legend of Old Gregg.
Da Funk - Daft Punk
Man with dog's head and ghetto blaster walks about a bit.
E=MC² - Big Audio Dynamite
A young person's guide to Nic Roeg.
FBI - The Shadows
Oh poo... how terribly unhip of me. Bought a Shadows compilation so I did thinking it retro cool, but honestly, they really do make guitars bland, however much they popularised the Strat in the UK.
Galactic Zoo Dossier - Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come
An 11-minute excerpt from the album. The tracks all have individual names but I can't be bothered to check what they are (checks anyway: Creep/Creation/Gypsy Escape). It starts with an appalling piece where Arthur bewails existence over instrumental scratchings then turns into an instrumental via a bloody racket.
Habanera - Victoria de Los Angeles
Aww yeah! The love song from Carmen!
I Ain't Got No Heart - Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention
From Freak Out.
Jackie - Scott Walker
Apparently the best ever translation of a Jacques Brel song. My favourite line: "Authentic queers and phoney virgins". :-D
Ka-boom Ka-boom - Marilyn Manson
Sometimes this sort of stuff is exactly what you need.
La Chanson de Jacky - Jacques Brel
Apparently the best ever translation of a Scott Walker song.
Macarthur Park - the Four Tops
I have five versions of this song, and this is probably the blandest. I think I'll delete it, then Jimmy Webb's own rendition can take its place on the list. (deletes)
Na Na Na Na Naa - Kaiser Chiefs
Bollocks! Just like everybody else's N selection! Way back when the album came out I thought I rather liked the Chiefs and bought it then ripped it to hard drive but they're a bit crap really, aren't they? I think I'll delete all their tracks too, then first in the Ns will be... Peter Hammill's Nadir's Big Chance/Institute Of Mental Health, Burning. Wow! Not sure if that's cool or terribly uncool...
O Superman - Laurie Anderson
Aaaaah. And, rest.
Pachelbel's Canon in D - Yngwie Malmsteen
Damnation! Why this version? Must file this in the Eggbox. Anyways... it's only come in front of Cafe del Mar's better one because the Cafe one has come with "and Gigue" added to the track name.
Queen Bitch - Bowie
What a wonderful song title!
Race Out - Battles
Sounds like the inside of the Joker's head.
Sabre Dance - Love Sculpture
Sixties guitar madness from Dave Edmunds. Without googling now, can anyone remember the bass player and drummer? Neither can I. Of course, at only 23 I'm not old enough too.
Tainted Love - Marilyn Manson
Oh, this is crap. Nowhere near as good as their destruction of Sweet Dreams.
U Don't Know Me - Basement Jaxx
Oh, Jaxx, with your textspeak you have beaten Pere Ubu and Ubu Dance Party to top spot!
V-2 Schneider - Bowie
Wiki tells me this is a tribute to Kraftwerk's Florian Schneider. This is my today's something new that you learn every day.
W - Van der Graaf Generator
I love this for its sheer misery.
XTC vs Adam Ant - They Might Be Giants
Dated a bit, hasn't it, this? We never find out who wins. Best bit: "XTC versus Adam Ant/I can't tell you why/Even the singer from Bow Wow Wow/Can't make up her mind."
Yakety Axe - Chet Atkins
Yeah that's right! It's Benny Hill's running around music played on guitar! Absolutely marvelous.
Zabadak! - Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich
Also absolutely marvelous.
